Bruichladdich 20yo, Claxton’s Warehouse No.1
Het wat kruidige karakter doet mij vermoeden dat het een Oloroso hogshead betreft. De interactie tussen het vat en de spirit is prachtig.
Claxton’s gearriveerd in Oss en dus…
Enkele weken geleden maakten we al melding van het heuglijke feit dat Wijnhuis Oss de prachtige flessen van Claxton’s Spirits op de schappen zou gaan zetten. Er was al een voorproefje met wat flessen uit de Exploration serie maar nu zijn ook de karakteristieke hoekige flessen uit de Single Cask serie gearriveerd.

In de afgelopen jaren heb ik mijn enthousiasme over Claxton’s niet onder stoelen of banken gestoken. Al diverse bottelingen hebben in mijn kast gestaan en nog meer hebben er al op de website gestaan.

Sometimes about bottles we have had in our collections, sometimes about samples we received from Adrian Hoose and we even had two whisky’s bottled for SMWG on Facebook. Recently I added a new bottle to my collection. New for me but is it that new?
Claxton’s homework!
A few weeks ago we received an email from our friends over at Claxton’s headquarters in Yorkshire. It’s springtime and that means that it’s time for the Spring 2019 release by the British independent bottler. The official press release mentioned the five very promising new bottlings and this week a nice box of samples arrived in Oss. We’ve got some nice homework to do!
Twee maal Cadenhead’s Small Batch Glenrothes
Glenrothes, een distillery met een bijzondere reputatie. De eigen bottelingen zijn meer dan eens niet al te best ontvangen. Onafhankelijk gebottelde whiskies van deze distillery doen het daarentegen vaak wél prima. Zo proefde ik al een aantal prachtige bottelingen van Adelphi, lieten we voor de SMWG (Facebook groep) een Glenrothes bottelen door Claxton’s én opende, en versampelde, ik afgelopen jaar een Signatory Vintage Glenrothes uit mijn geboortejaar 1972.
Claxton’s Winter Releases
In het najaar van 2018 mocht ik meedoen met een tweettasting waarin vijf nieuwe releases van bottelaar Claxton’s besproken zouden worden. Vanwege onze trip naar Schotland had ik mijn notities thuis alvast gemaakt en zittend aan de bar van The Cairndow Inn was het zaak deze te verwerken in de tweets. Het werd een leuke avond waarbij het vooral mooi is om te merken hoe verschillend de meningen kunnen zijn in zo’n groep.
Claxton’s Glenrothes 11yo in tweevoud
Vorig jaar werd voor het eerst, in samenwerking met Claxton’s en The Old Pipe, een botteling uitgebracht voor Facebook groep SMWG. Ook dit jaar wordt er weer een mooie botteling uitgebracht en ook dit jaar siert het Claxton’s etiket de fles. Er werd een bourbon hogshead met daarin een 11yo Glenrothes geselecteerd. Dit vat werd verdeeld over een aantal octaves (kleinere vaten met een inhoud van 55 liter). Een van deze octaves werd gebotteld voor de SMWG, Johan van Boxmeer liet voor The Old Pipe een tweede octave bottelen.
Auchentoshan 26yo Sherry Hogshead by Claxton’s
End of the line. Good things coming to an end. It’s time to review the last Claxton’s sample I received earlier this year. As you’ve seen I’ve lined them up according to age. Therefor it shouldn’t be surprising that this one is the oldest. A Lowland whisky distilled at the Auchentoshan distillery, matured in a Sherry Hogshead and bottled at an age of 26. Should be nice, don’t you think?
Glen Keith 22yo and 23yo by Claxton’s
When I received the lovely box that Adrian Hoose sent me, I immediately made a plan how to review the fine samples that were in it. Nothing fancy, just going upwards with the age of the whisky. I struggled with these two though. Two whisky’s distilled at the same distillery and following eachother in age. Let’s put them both in one review and compare them.
Macduff 14yo Sherry Butt bottled by Claxton’s
Working towards the weekend seems to be a great time for another Claxton’s sample review. Of course I’m not tasting the whisky while I’m working but it’s very nice to sit down with a fine dram after a busy day at work don’t you think? Today it’s a 14yo Macduff that has been poured into my glencairn.
Glen Moray 10yo First Fill Barrel by Claxton’s
It’s review time again! The next Claxton Spirits sample I received two weeks ago is in my Glencairn. This is a Speyside whisky, distilled at the Glen Moray distillery. It was part of a set containing seven whiskysamples.
English Whisky Company 6yo Rum Cask by Claxton’s
I’m very sure I’ve never ever tasted a whisky that was distilled in England before. That’s going to change now because I received a box of samples earlier this week. The box was sent to me by Claxton’s Spirits and it contained seven samples of their newest bottlings.
Claxton’s Bunnahabhain 16yo voor The Old Pipe
In het najaar van 2017 was ik bij The Old Pipe in St. Oedenrode. Volgens mij was ik er toen om de 25yo Cambus van Claxton’s te kopen. In ieder geval was het ook de dag dat Johan van Boxmeer me vertelde over een nieuwe botteling voor zijn slijterij. Hij liet me zelfs een beetje proeven van het casksample dat hij had staan en toen wist ik het al meteen. De 16yo Bunnahabhain die door Claxton Spritis gebotteld ging worden, moest ook in mijn kast komen te staan.

In my collection most bottles are part of a small batch. Single cask bottlings, dual cask sometimes as well. Some of them were distillery releases but most of them were released by independent bottlers. Helen Arthur, Ian MacLeod, Claxton’s, Kintra, The Ultimate and of course the big ones Signatory Vintage, Gordon & MacPhail and… Cadenhead’s. Last year I visited the Cadenhead shop in London, this year I was in Edinburgh and of course I visited the shop overthere as well.
Claxton’s Ledaig 10yo SMWG Exclusive #1 The Old Pipe
A few years ago I started a group on Facebook for people who like single malt whisky. The name Single Malt Whisky Group later changed into SMWG and I created a logo to go with it. The logo was printed on T-shirts and hoodies, glencairns and copitas were engraved with it but, until now, it didn’t turn up on the label af a bottle of single malt whisky.

It must be about a year ago that Johan van Boxmeer, owner of The Old Pipe in St. Oedenrode, told me about his plans to bring a “new” independent bottler to his shop. His plans became a reality and by now all of the Dutch whisky enthusiasts know the characteristic bottles. A stylish bottle is one thing, it’s about the contents in my opinion and that’s why I was very glad to taste a few of the recently bottled expressions.

Tijd voor het tweede deel van de Claxton’s sample drieluik, een korte serie over drie samples die ik ontving van Michel Heesbeen. Ik beschreef eerder al de 20yo Arran, de 19yo Glenrothes mag het drieluik sluiten. Nu is het de beurt aan de 25yo Auchroisk.

Laatst was ik dus bij whiskyliefhebber, en mede-Ossenaar, Michel Heesbeen. Ik mocht bij hem een paar mooie samples uitzoeken en drie van de uitgezochte samples waren afkomstig van Claxton’s bottelingen. Mooi voor een korte serie dus.
