The wood makes the whisky, Ardmore 16yo

door | november 4, 2020

Just as promised, another night with a fire and a peated single malt from Gordon & MacPhail. This time the 1996 Ardmore.

I tasted a few single malts from this distillery, but this one is new for me. This Highland single malt has been matured for about 17 years in a re-fill Sherry hogshead. I love sherry matured Whisky so I’m very curious about this one.

Distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2013.
Refill Sherry hogshead.

Nose:
And yes… there are definitely Sherry influences, sweet, dried fruits, green apple and some really nice smokiness.

Taste:
It starts very soft and sweet, but soon my mouth is full of wonderful flavors. Sherry, green apple, some tropical fruits, oak, smoke and a little bit of peat.

Finish:
A medium long finish with again the wonderful smoke and sweetness.

I really did not expect this! And I mean… this could be a bottle I would buy. A very nice balanced Whisky with a lot of fine influences of the cask. I can understand why G&M selected this one to use in their line-up for “The wood makes the Whisky”.

Thanks Gordon & MacPhail.
